Fast & Easy DIY Headbands

I’ve recently become obsessed with my sewing machine, and I’ve been constantly looking for easy sewing projects so I can move on to fun, harder projects – like this Simplicity crochet storage set. I mean, I’m not sure if that’s “hard” but it’s a little overwhelming for this new sewer. 🙂

Anyways, I found this awesome vlogger/blogger, Made Everyday. She has a really cool site with different patterns and tutorials, and this headband tutorial came from her. I’m not cool enough to come up with my own. You can follow the simple instructions below, but Dana has a great video tutorial that’s SO easy to follow. If you’re not used to sewing knits, it might be a good idea to take a look.

Here we go!

First, cut a piece of fabric 10 inches by 18-20 inches. For me, 18 inches was just right. If you have a bigger head or want it a little more loose, you might want to go bigger. If it’s for a child or someone with a small head, you will want to make it smaller.

Next, put the right sides together and sew down the open edge. For knit fabrics, use a zigzag stitch so that the stitches hold and the fabric can stretch. Fold right side out. You’ll have something similar to below.sewn headband

Next, start to roll the fabric back inside out – but only half way. Make sure the seams match up like the photo below.headband seams

You’ll sew around this opening, leaving a 1-2″ opening. This can be tricky since it’s a smaller area, but just go slow and adjust when you need to.

After you’re finished and there is a 1-2″ opening, turn it right side out again. It will look like this.

The only thing left to do is sew up the small hole! You can hand sew it, but it’s so much faster to just use a straight stitch on the machine. Just sew it up, snip the ends off, and you’re finished! That’s it. So easy, right?
