Every year we sit down and think about our goals for the New Year. I don’t know about you, but I often think about the things that I haven’t accomplished over the year instead of the things I did accomplish. Not this year!
I accomplished a lot. I experience a lot. Let’s take a look at my goals from last year. Side note: You’ll notice I’ve only written two blog posts in 2015 – oops! Life is busy, okay?
I wanted to train at the gym. And guess what? I killed it in 2015. Absolutely killed it. I still have A LONG WAY to go with this. This sounds so cliche, but it’s literally a life-long journey. My nutrition could be way better, but that’s just something I need to improve on.
Not only did I want to find a job after graduation, but I wanted it to be a challenging job that would help me grow as a marketing professional. I’ve had my current job for almost a year, and I love it! It’s fun, challenging, and never the same. I’m an Online Advertising Specialist at an Online Marketing agency, and working with our clients has been so great and nerve-wracking, but I get more and more comfortable every day.
BE BRAVE, DAMMIT. This goes for work and my personal life. Client calls and meeting used to terrify me. I would lose sleep over it. It’s a lot better, but I still have more progress to make.
Don’t spend all your money. I’m not bankrupt, I moved into my own apartment, I bought a car, and I am financially independent. That’s a win in my book.
And now – *drum roll* – let’s talk about goals for 2016! Setting realistic goals is important. Otherwise you’re just disappointed in yourself at the end of the year. Here are a couple of things I’m going to kick ass at this year:
Keep killing it at the gym. I have spent many nights and countless hours reading up on things like macros, carb cycling, drop sets, circuit training, and so much more. This past year I followed a couple of programs by Kayla Itsines, Jamie Eason, and Erin Stern to help me reach some goals. I’m the kind of person that needs a plan to tell me what to do, when, and how much. Otherwise I just wander around the weight room, pick a couple of things up, and then leave because I’m bored or don’t know what to do. I’m so productive by myself, huh? Anyways, my plan is to continue with the gym 5-6 days a week. I’ve got some BodyBuilding.com programs lined up in my BodySpace app. The biggest thing I’m going to be working on is the nutritional part. The gym is habit now, but so is reaching for seconds or ordering a latte “just because”. I need to start creating better eating habits and paying more attention to my macros to find out what works best for me.
Empty my yarn basket. Yup. This is a real goal. I have so much yarn it’s ridiculous! So, my goal is to crochet my little butt off until I’m out of yarn. Then I can go out and get more. 🙂
I want to learn more sewing techniques. I got a sewing machine for Christmas, and I’ve never been so excited! I already made some curtains, but I want to make more! There are so many things I can make, and I have no idea where to start. I keep getting JoAnns coupons texted to me. It’s a sign that I should go out and buy a bunch of fabric, right?
Stay on track with my debt snowball plan. As I mentioned before…I bought a car last year. I also have student loans. So, like many other fresh graduates, I have a buttload of debt. My plan is to pay it off ASAP so in the future I can start to afford the fun things in life – a wedding, a house, kids, etc. If I only make the minimum payments, I’ll be paying everything off until 2025. That’s not okay with me. I’ve been reading about the debt snowball plan, and it seems to be a great idea. If you’re pay XXX amount per month towards your debt, and you pay off one loan, why not put that “extra” money towards your other ones? You end up always paying the same each month. The loans/debts you’re paying off just change over time. I’ve got a fancy spreadsheet with everything worked out, and I’m on track to get everything paid off in half the time. If I can afford it now, why not, right?
These resolutions seem pretty typical, and maybe they are. What’s important is that they’re important to me. Life is so unnecessarily stressful, and having these little goals to look forward to crushing is exciting. Paying off loans and hitting the gym might not be exciting for everyone, but because I know I can do it and I have a plan, I’m excited.
What goals do you have for 2016? How about for January or even for today? If you don’t have any yet, it’s no big deal. Just because January 1 has passed, that doesn’t mean it’s too late to make goals. Every day is a new day to say, “I’m going to invest in myself!” or “I’m going to finish that project I’ve been putting off!” You just have to take that first step.
