REVIEW: Darn Good Yarn Subscription Box – May 2017

darn good yarn review for may 2017

I love subscription boxes. They’re so fun and so many of them give you a taste of certain products or foods. I have a whole list of makeup and beauty products from my ipsy subscription that I plan to buy at some point (I have to get through my samples first!).

A few months ago when I discovered the Darn Good Yarn subscription box, I immediately signed up. A yarn subscription box!? How have I never even thought to seek one out before!? And for $10 + shipping, how could I say no?

Here’s what you get.

My first month came in a cute little box with a skein of yarn, a crochet hook, a set of small knitting needles, and a pattern! May’s pattern was for three little baskets that can hold little succulents and trinkets.

Overall, here’s what I think:

  • Pattern was unique and easy to follow
  • The color was bright and fun
  • There was plenty of extra yarn

  • The yarn tore easy
  • The yarn smelled strongly of vinegar

First off, the pattern was so easy to follow! I flew through the pattern with enough yarn left to make at least one more. I was pretty impressed with that because now I have scrap yarn for smaller projects or embellishments.

My biggest issue with the yarn is that it seems fairly weak. When I started I didn’t wind it the right way and ended up with a ball of yarn that took me 3 hours to untangle. 🙂 Totally my fault, but I ended up having like four different balls after I untangled it because it kept ripping. I ran into the same issue even after untangling the mess. That was a little annoying, but I got through it.

Who wouldn’t want a skein of yarn, some fun goodies, and a pattern every month for just $14 (with shipping)? This is my first yarn subscription, and despite a few hiccups with the yarn, I think I’ll be here for awhile.

For some reason I had the most difficult time trying to find something to put in these planters. My creativity was seriously lacking. I went to Jo-Anns like 50 times. I finally found some flowers that would go with the colors of the yarn, so I picked out some mini planters, cut down the flowers and shoved them on in there.

They turned out PERFECT.

I’m still trying to find a spot in our apartment for the planter, but right now it’s hanging on our living room closet. 🙂

I just received my June box last week, and I’m so excited to finish up the pattern and show you guys how it turned out! The yarn is a beautiful blue-green and June’s mystery item is so cute!

Do you subscribe to Darn Good Yarn or any other yarn subscription boxes? What’s your favorite one?

Follow along. You know you want to.
